Feedlot shade structures

Shade can have a large impact on the body heat load experienced by cattle by reducing solar (sun) radiation and slowing the rate of body heat gain. Recent research in beef cattle in the USA has shown under experimental conditions that the provision of shade can improve cattle comfort and productivity and increase profitability under some climatic conditions. The design of shade structures should ensure that wind speeds are maximised in the feedlot pen and, where possible, air temperatures are kept below body temperature.
